In China, landscape painting is called “Shan shui,” which means “Mountain and Water.” Indeed, if one looks closely, one will notice that there is no Chinese landscape painting without at least one mountain and a body of water. Pond, lake, river, or spring — water symbolizes fluidity. It always flows downward to embrace the Earth. The mountain, on the other hand, rises to challenge the clouds and reach for the sky. Between Heaven and Earth — isn’t that where humanity finds its most harmonious and fitting place?
