With loans from across the world, this major retrospective brings together Vermeer’s most famous masterpieces including Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Geographer, The Milkmaid, The Little Street, Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid, and Woman Holding a Balance. In all, 28 of his surviving 37 works. This film invites audiences to a privileged view of the exhibition, accompanied by the director of the Rijksmuseum and the curators of the show. Paul Sérusier spent his entire summer of 1888 painting with Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven, Brittany. This master of colour gave invaluable advice to the young Sérusier, who was part of the new generation of painters known as the Post-Impressionists. The Impressionists favoured the visual sensation of the motif, but they had not broken with the illusionist rendering of nature.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472-1553) is a major artist of the German Renaissance, working in Wittenberg in the first half of the 16th century. Official painter to Frederic the Wise, the Prince Regent of Saxony, he was close to the reformer Martin Luther. As well as biblical themes, he was above all interested in portrayal of the female nude, as in the “Adam and Eve” of Besancon or the famous “Three Graces”, recently acquired by the Louvre after a fund raising appeal. Two legends of British comedy, Ronni Ancona and Jan Ravens are joined on this Road Trip by antiquers Phil Serrell and James Braxton. Starting in the North Yorkshire town of Redcar they’ll head for auction in Stockport in Cheshire. Jan gets rather carried away and spends every single penny of her entire budget. While Ronni gets a kick out of a very kitsch glass boot. A quick detour sees Jan find out why Hartlepudlians thought a monkey was a Frenchman and Ronni is left open mouthed when Braxton takes off his clothes. Crikey!

In his quest for "functional" art, he wanted his new kinetic plastic art to help beautify the city and thereby transform society. Today, he remains the celebrated inventor of Op art.

The team wonders; who was Coorte who, in a time of lavishness, spent hours working on his austere still lifes of just a bunch of asparagus, three peaches or a bowl of strawberries? And how is it possible that eight different colors are needed to approximate the white of Coortes asparagus? And why are they so transparent? The search for the answers takes the team to a small church and an asparagus farmer in the Dutch provinces, which leads to a special discovery in a chemical laboratory.

Along the way the girls meet a clog maker who carves shoes by hand. While the boys head to the Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum to hear about the regiment’s involvement at Gallipoli.

Born in Damascus, Syria, Ammar Abd Rabbo lived in Libya and Lebanon before moving to France at the age of 12. He has been working as a press photographer since 1990, and has signed more than sixty covers for well-known magazines. Ammar Abd Rabbo is not a war photographer, but has covered several conflicts, such as Iraq (2003), Lebanon (2006), Libya (2011), as well as several trips to Syria, in 2013 and 2014, to show the daily life and resistance of the inhabitants, rather than the military life.

In this episode, we meet Ammar Abd Rabbo, press photographer. He says of his work, that he likes to write thanks to photos. He does not define himself as a war reporter but rather as a generalist reporter. He likes to diversify: one day he wants to photograph the Cannes Film Festival, another day he wants to photograph a political event...

William Turner is known throughout the world as one of the best landscape painters of the English school. He strived to represent landscapes in what was qualified as a romantic style. As his artistic creations progressed, which are revealed here, Turner gave himself over to greater fantasy and boldness in his treatment of colour and light, verging on the imaginary in such a way as to be considered today as one of the precursors of impressionism. Born in Le Havre in 1968, CyKlop practices a playful, popular and often interactive art. He is known for his installations of urban furniture that color the city and whose offbeat poetry brings a touch of fantasy to the street.
