Based on a major exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Tokyo Stories spans 400 years of incredibly rich art, from Hokusai’s prints to Pop Art posters, via contemporary photography, manga, cinema and street art. The exhibition was a huge success and attracted a significantly younger and more diverse audience than usual. The film draws on the exhibition to take us to Tokyo and explore the city’s art and artistic figures in greater depth. A superbly illustrated and richly detailed documentary, which traces the journey of a metropolis marked by ceaseless cycles of destruction and rebirth throughout its 400-year history, to become one of the most dynamic and fascinating cities in the world today.

Museo del Prado in Madrid holds one of the biggest collections of paintings in the world. The “Garden of Delights”, a triptych by Hieronymus Bosch, is one of its jewels. But naturally it is the Spanish School which predominates, with masterpieces by Velasquez and Goya. In China's Zhejiang province, a strange animal crawls out of adobe. Wa Shan, literally "tile mountain", is a rather unusual guesthouse, built between 2011 and 2013 by Chinese architect Wang Shu. Winding along a river and disappearing in places behind wild vegetation, the guesthouse is set in a landscape of mountains and water. Wang Shu is a great scenographer and is renowned for his commitment to sustainable architecture. The guesthouse was built using recycled materials and rammed earth, a provocation in a country that concretes at every turn.

This eagerly-awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts was the first-ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Édouard Manet. Covering the entire career of this enigmatic and sometimes controversial artist, the exhibition brought together works from Europe, Asia and the United States. Manet's portraiture has never been the subject of an exhibition, although it represents around half of his artistic output. He painted his family, friends and the literary, political and artistic figures of the day, bringing to life not only his subjects but also Parisian society.

The city of Le Havre, in Normandy, was severely bombed during the Second World War. The destroyed area was rebuilt according to the plan of a team headed by Auguste Perret, from 1945 to 1964. The site forms the administrative, commercial and cultural centre of Le Havre. Le Havre is exceptional among many reconstructed cities for its unity and integrity. It combines a reflection of the earlier pattern of the town and its extant historic structures with the new ideas of town planning and construction technology. It is an outstanding post-war example of urban planning and architecture based on the unity of methodology and the use of prefabrication, the systematic utilization of a modular grid, and the innovative exploitation of the potential of concrete.

Although Degas’ art is difficult to classify, it is often associated with the impressionist movement, which emerged in France at the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, he developed a very personal style with a preference for indoors subjects rather than the open-air scenes favoured by the impressionist painters. The 10 masterpieces presented here are a good illustration of Degas’ preferred themes: the show, the bath, family portraits and the working classes. King Philip IV of Spain’s portrait painter, Diego Velazquez, (1599-1660) is the archetype of the brilliant court painter and alone embodies the stunning Spanish school of the “golden” 17th century. William Turner is known throughout the world as one of the best landscape painters of the English school. He strived to represent landscapes in what was qualified as a romantic style.
