In an exhibition entitled ‘Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure’, The National Gallery has chosen to focus on Vermeer’s relationship with music. ‘Girl in a White Kimono’ is a painting from Breitner's famous Kimono Girl series. As a preliminary study for his paintings, he used photographs of his model (Geesje Kwak) in kimono. To get as close as possible to the creative process of Breitner, the team will take a photo with Breitner's original camera. The camera is fantastic museum piece in the safekeeping of Leiden University. It turns out to be a complicated chemical process with glass negatives and slow shutter speeds. Charlotte finds out that she needs a certain medium to be able to complete the reconstruction properly. Michel investigates and ends up in Cambridge; looking for a recipe in the archives of an old paint shop.

Leonardo da Vinci is the most famous Italian Renaissance painter. A prolifically talented genius, (painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, town planner, mathematician, botanist, philosopher, inventor...), he considerably influenced history of art. His sfumato technique and use of chiaroscuro are still studied today. The “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper” exposed in the Louvre and in the church Santa Maria delle Grazie, displayed here, are among his most renowned paintings, admired and parodied throughout the world. This eagerly-awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts was the first-ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Édouard Manet. Covering the entire career of this enigmatic and sometimes controversial artist, the exhibition brought together works from Europe, Asia and the United States. In 2013, Norway celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edvard Munch (1863-1944), one of the most prominent figures in modern art. Munch 150, co-produced by the National Museum and the Munch Museum, is already being hailed as "the exhibition of a lifetime". Public interest is enormous, as evidenced by the record-breaking $120 million public auction result for one of his four paintings, The Scream. This presentation will take you behind the scenes of how this exhibition came to be, as well as including a guided tour of Norway, outlining the biography of this man whose life spanned the mid-19th century to the German occupation during the Second World War.

Today we’re in the North East of England with top wheelchair paralympians Tanni Grey-Thompson and Jade Jones. Tanni has a record haul of medals and records, while her promising young protégé Jade is just starting out on her athletics career. Also John learns how an American revolutionised British public transport and Lynn sees why snakes are milked in Liverpool.

Paired with experts David Harper and Catherine Southon they Road Trip from Bletchley in Buckinghamshire to an auction in London. There’s also opportunity to hear how Mrs Beeton became the first ‘domestic Goddess’ and why Luton played a critical role in the fashion world when hats were de rigueur daily wear. David and Suzannah gamble on a giant ant while Catherine and Kate plump for a very large tea urn.

Although Degas’ art is difficult to classify, it is often associated with the impressionist movement, which emerged in France at the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, he developed a very personal style with a preference for indoors subjects rather than the open-air scenes favoured by the impressionist painters.
