Exhibition on Screen

To mark the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, a major exhibition has opened in Rome. Exhibition on Screen had exclusive access to this event, which brings together over 200 major works by this Renaissance master. The film explores the exhibition and sheds new light on the work of this often misunderstood or, on the contrary, idealized artist.

Artist's Workshop

Suzanne Valadon was born in 1865. Her son, Maurice Utrillo, was born in 1883. Both were painters, and lived part of their lives in the Montmartre district of Paris. It was a flourishing period for the village. It was in this atmosphere that they enjoyed their hours of glory and drama.

Sketchbook

Raphael Federici (street artist), Marine Goodmorning (illustrator), Luca Fiore (cartoonist) and Harry Boudchicha (drawing teacher) reveal their best drawing techniques. Each episode focuses on a specific subject: movement, oil painting, shadows, hair... For the first 10 minutes, each artist gives a theoretical lesson illustrated by sketches. Then they each start working on their creation. Finally, they end with a debrief, comparing and explaining their techniques

Architectures

In about 1560, in Maser, the Barbaro brothers, members of one of the most important Venetian families, asked the architect Andrea Palladio to build them a country house and the painter Paolo Veronese to decorate the walls. Andrea Palladio, a former stonemason, had become the favourite architect of the Venetian aristocracy and invent a new type of country residence, half palazzo, half farm, known as a Villa. The palladian villa is a revolution. For the first time, Architecture must also consider habitation and daily usage in trying to marry beauty with utility, for a new architectural ambition and a new concept of beauty. Some thirty of these prestigious houses were built in Venetia between 1550 and 1580, Andrea Palladio define the basis for all oderly and geometric occidental architecture. A remarkable event occurred at London’s National Gallery when the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings was assembled in a unique exhibition: Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan. Leonardo is recognised as perhaps the greatest painter and sculptor of all time but there was no end to his talents. This film tells his life story and expands on Leonardo the visionary and inventor from the place where he lived out his final years at Château du Clos Lucé in France, concluding that Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps the very embodiment of the spirit of the Renaissance.

Bosch's hometown in the Netherlands has no paintings by the painter, yet for the major "Visions of Genius" exhibition held on the anniversary of his death in 2016, the Noordbrabants Museum has managed to bring together almost all of Bosch's paintings and drawings. "Visions of Genius" was the most ambitious exhibition ever dedicated to the Dutch painter. This documentary will plunge you into the strange, visionary world of Hieronymus Bosch.

"I envy the Japanese", wrote Van Gogh to his brother Theo. Thanks to the exhibition on which this film is based, at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, we understand why. Although Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan, it remains the country that had the greatest influence on him and his work. By visiting Japanese art galleries in Paris and creating his own image of Japan after extensive research, print collections and lengthy discussions with other artists, the discovery of Japanese art took van Gogh's career in an exciting new direction.

Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres is best known as the painter of the odalisques. Obsessed with the ideal of beauty, he glorified the female form, with its porcelain whiteness and its curves… Ingres struck a path between Classicism and the influence of the Orient. You will see the famous women bathers in “The Turkish Bath” and also some of his historic paintings such as “Oedipus and the Sphinx” and, of course, his portraits, with the famous “Monsieur Bertin”. A stained glass window for 1000 years

To celebrate the thousandth anniversary of its foundation, Strasbourg Cathedral is offering visitors a brand-new stained glass window in the Chapelle Sainte-Catherine. This innovative contemporary work by photographer Véronique Ellena took over a year to complete, hand-in-hand with the great master glassmaker Pierre-Alain Parot. Never before has such a stained-glass window been created! Unique in its technique, original in its concept, this film reveals the secrets behind the making of a truly exceptional work of art.

The Goldstein Residence

Discover James Goldstein's house in the heights of Hollywood. It is a beautiful example of the architecture of the mythical and prolific John Lautner. When Goldstein bought this property, the house was not finished and Lautner died in the meantime. Goldstein set about finishing it with the help of the famous architect's former associates. To top it off, he commissioned James Turrell to create an original work on the hillside.

A special day

In this episode, we will spend a special day with Grégoire Lacroix, director of the antique decents department of the auction house, Aguttes. We meet him at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris, the largest auction house in the world. For several months, he has been working on two important sales and we are going to accompany him during the last hours of preparations.

Kimiko Yoshida has settled in a working-class neighborhood in the northeast of Paris. Her house is at the same time an exhibition gallery, a reception room and a studio. This eagerly-awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts was the first-ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Édouard Manet. Covering the entire career of this enigmatic and sometimes controversial artist, the exhibition brought together works from Europe, Asia and the United States. Manet's portraiture has never been the subject of an exhibition, although it represents around half of his artistic output. He painted his family, friends and the literary, political and artistic figures of the day, bringing to life not only his subjects but also Parisian society.

Celebrity Antiques Road Trip

Two legends of British comedy, Ronni Ancona and Jan Ravens are joined on this Road Trip by antiquers Phil Serrell and James Braxton. Starting in the North Yorkshire town of Redcar they’ll head for auction in Stockport in Cheshire. Jan gets rather carried away and spends every single penny of her entire budget. While Ronni gets a kick out of a very kitsch glass boot. A quick detour sees Jan find out why Hartlepudlians thought a monkey was a Frenchman and Ronni is left open mouthed when Braxton takes off his clothes. Crikey!
