Exhibition on Screen

A remarkable event occurred at London’s National Gallery when the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings was assembled in a unique exhibition: Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan. Leonardo is recognised as perhaps the greatest painter and sculptor of all time but there was no end to his talents. This film tells his life story and expands on Leonardo the visionary and inventor from the place where he lived out his final years at Château du Clos Lucé in France, concluding that Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps the very embodiment of the spirit of the Renaissance.

François Boucher (1703-1770) is the archetypal French Rococo painter. He paints mythological themes tinged with gallantry, for example in the beautiful “Diane resting after her Bath” at the Louvre Museum. His patron was Madame de Pompadour, whose portrait he painted many times. Influenced by the Enlightenment movement, he devoted himself to Chinese themes (“The Chinese Garden”), to pastoral landscape (“Charms of Country Life”) and to a certain sensual Orientalism (“Brown Odalisque”). Architectures

In the early 90s, the new mayor of Sendai developed a project for a media library, a type of building hitherto unknown in Japan. Its architect, Toyo ito, broke with the assumptions of 20th-century modern architecture: the media library, with its "space without barriers", was the first step towards an immaterial, evanescent architecture, leaving plenty of room for the ephemeral.

Through interviews with curators, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers, Exhibition on Screen’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art, culture and fashion.

This film aims to enable viewers to look at the world with Sempé, and to penetrate the mystery of the gentle music he composes, inconsolable and cheerful, with his delicate strokes.

Artist's Workshop

In this episode, we will meet the artist Ben. Active on the contemporary art scene for over 50 years, he is a self-taught, multi-faceted character. His success is undeniable. If his status as an artist is affirmed through his famous writings painted in white cursive letters on a black background, his temperament as a "jack of all trades" has made him one of the most avant-garde artistic personalities in the art world since the 1960s. Attached more than anything else to his region, the artist has been working and living for over 40 years in the heights of Nice, in Saint-Pancrace, in a house where each room can become a studio, and where the progressive lack of space has led him to create an extension, the doors of which he is now opening to us.

Exhibition on Screen

The Impressionists are the most popular group in art history - millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But, to begin with, they were scorned, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists, “hungry for independence”, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever. What led to that first groundbreaking show 150 years ago? Who were the maverick personalities that wielded their brushes in such a radical and provocative way? The spectacular Musée d’Orsay exhibition brings fresh eyes to this extraordinary tale of passion and rebellion. The story is told not by historians and curators but in the words of those who witnessed the dawn of Impressionism: the artists, press and people of Paris, 1874. See the show that changed everything on the big screen.

Without Camille Pissarro, there is no Impressionist movement. He is rightfully known as the father of Impressionism. It was a dramatic path that Pissarro followed, and throughout it all he wrote extensively to his family. It is through these intimate and revealing letters that this gripping film reveals Pissarro’s life and work. Born in the West Indies, Pissarro found his passion in paint as a young man in Paris, and by the age of 43 had corralled a group of enthusiastic artists into a new collective. For the next 40 years Pissarro was the driving force behind what has today become the world’s favourite artistic movement. The Ashmolean Museum has a long tradition of excellence.
