Hopper’s work is the most recognisable art in America – popular, praised, and mysterious. Countless painters, photographers, filmmakers and musicians have been influenced by his art – but who was he, and how did a struggling illustrator create such a bounty of notable work? This new film takes a deep look into Hopper’s art, his life, and his relationships. From his early career as an illustrator; his wife giving up her own promising art career to be his manager; his critical and commercial acclaim; and in his own words – this film explores the enigmatic personality behind the brush…

Museo del Prado in Madrid holds one of the biggest collections of paintings in the world. The “Garden of Delights”, a triptych by Hieronymus Bosch, is one of its jewels. But naturally it is the Spanish School which predominates, with masterpieces by Velasquez and Goya. Look at Velasquez’s famous “Las Meninas” in which the painter portrays himself next to the Infanta and her followers. Sketchbook

Raphael Federici (street artist), Marine Goodmorning (illustrator), Luca Fiore (cartoonist) and Harry Boudchicha (drawing teacher) reveal their best drawing techniques. Each episode focuses on a specific subject: movement, oil painting, shadows, hair... For the first 10 minutes, each artist gives a theoretical lesson illustrated by sketches. Then they each start working on their creation. Finally, they end with a debrief, comparing and explaining their techniques

He was one of the few collectors to take an interest in the Impressionist painters, at a time when they were attacked and denigrated. Prog rocker Rick Wakeman and best mate Ian Lavender, loved as Pike from Dad’s Army, enjoy a jolly B-road ride around Norfolk. In the company of experts Raj Bisram and David Harper the two antique hunting celebrities scour the county for treasure to take to auction in Nottingham. Rick also uncovers some hidden medieval graffiti in Norwich Cathedral while Ian detours to north Norfolk to see the world’s largest collection of model soldiers. It was a dramatic path that Pissarro followed, and throughout it all he wrote extensively to his family. It is through these intimate and revealing letters that this gripping film reveals Pissarro’s life and work. Born in the West Indies, Pissarro found his passion in paint as a young man in Paris, and by the age of 43 had corralled a group of enthusiastic artists into a new collective. Their first show was scorned by the critics, but the group had acquired a new name: the Impressionists. Masterpiece

In 1840 Turner painted the masterpiece "Clouds and Water". Charlotte tries to fathom his loose style, with thick blobs. Englishman and cellist Dominic Seldis comes by to blare his cello with praise for this "British Rembrandt". Michel discovers that the painting has undergone precarious treatment, but wonders how. In search of the answers the team visits the Tate Britain and gather on a windy English cliff. An episode in which an iron, a chalk rock at Margate and a jar of beeswax play a leading role.

This eagerly-awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts was the first-ever retrospective devoted to the portraiture of Édouard Manet. Covering the entire career of this enigmatic and sometimes controversial artist, the exhibition brought together works from Europe, Asia and the United States. Manet's portraiture has never been the subject of an exhibition, although it represents around half of his artistic output. He painted his family, friends and the literary, political and artistic figures of the day, bringing to life not only his subjects but also Parisian society.

And animal lover Ching learns how one man faced ridicule and ruin while trying to protect cattle in the 19th century.

After a two-year touring exhibition, in 2015 Girl with a Pearl Earring returned to the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague. At 350 years old, the eternal Girl has always retained her aura of mystery and charm. Masterpiece

It was painted almost 600 years ago; the "Madonna at the Fountain" by Jan Van Eyck. Despite being a Charlotte’s favorite, she is reaching the limits of her ability. The minute details, the special use of oil paint and the slow-drying pigments play tricks on her. While the team is researching Van Eyck's complex oil painting technique, they are also travelling to Rome. In search for the deep blue ultramarine, in The Vatican they see the impact that Van Eyck had on his Italian contemporaries and lights a candle for Charlotte in the Santa Maria Maggiore.

Known for his monumental installations of the 1980s and 1990s, this artist also likes to work on canvas. In his compositions, Mahjoub Ben Bella makes colors dance and transmits the energy of signs.

Paul Sérusier spent his entire summer of 1888 painting with Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven, Brittany. This master of colour gave invaluable advice to the young Sérusier, who was part of the new generation of painters known as the Post-Impressionists. The Impressionists favoured the visual sensation of the motif, but they had not broken with the illusionist rendering of nature.
