Exhibition on Screen

Based on a major exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Tokyo Stories spans 400 years of incredibly rich art, from Hokusai’s prints to Pop Art posters, via contemporary photography, manga, cinema and street art. The exhibition was a huge success and attracted a significantly younger and more diverse audience than usual. The film draws on the exhibition to take us to Tokyo and explore the city’s art and artistic figures in greater depth. A superbly illustrated and richly detailed documentary, which traces the journey of a metropolis marked by ceaseless cycles of destruction and rebirth throughout its 400-year history, to become one of the most dynamic and fascinating cities in the world today.

Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) is a German Romantic painter who concentrated mainly on landscape art, which he rendered in minute detail. He was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century. A melancholy character, he peopled his canvases with human figures seen from behind, contemplating the enormity of nature, for example in his famous “The Wanderer above the Mists” in Hamburg or the “Chalk Cliffs on Rügen”. Notice his superb landscapes with their twilight tones. Enjoy your visit!

“Happiness is an angel with a serious face.” These words by the Italian painter Amadeo Modgliani define to perfection the portraits which made him famous… He reinvented the icon, with his oval faces, his elongated necks and lapis-lazuli eyes which are strangely expressive even when robbed of substance. You will be able to appreciate the simplicity of his figures, the restraint in his lines and colours, especially when you admire “The Woman with the Blue Eyes” or the “Portrait of Anna Zborowska”. Enjoy your visit!

Adalberto Libera was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century architecture, and also one of the most emblematic: he was both a pioneer of architectural modernity and a convinced Fascist, innovative architect and architect of the regime. Unlike the Nazis, Mussolini allied himself with the modern movement, which became the official architectural style of Fascism. In 1937, the regime launched one of its most ambitious projects: the E 42. The aim was to create a new monumental city for the 1942 International Exhibition, embodying the new Imperial Rome.

Rothko – Hartung: Colors and Cataclysms

While Europe and the United States dominate the art scene after World War II, Mark Rothko and Hans Hartung forged a discreet, friendly and very fertile bond. This documentary introduces the discovery of this little known and fascinating complicity between both artists. On the one hand, Mark Rothko, "the most violent of American painters" in his own words; on the other, Hans Hartung, a brilliant experimenter and "boxer" in front of the canvas. From the moment they met in 1950 in Hans Hartung's studio, there was a collaboration between them that resulted in huge, metaphysical and cataclysmic paintings. Then, Rothko gave a "lesson" to his European colleague, Hartung visited and paid homage to his elder and then mourned his suicide from Antibes, where he had a huge villa-studio built and kept the secrets of his relationship. This Rothko-Hartung encounter is an unprecedented and yet essential subject to understand a part of 20th century art.

John Singer Sargent - Portraitist of Paradox

From September 22, 2025 to January 11, 2026, following its presentation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée d’Orsay will devote a major exhibition to John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), marking the centenary of the painter’s death. A century after his passing, John Singer Sargent—celebrated for his portraits of French, English, and American high society during the Belle Époque—remains an enigma. Beneath a façade of carefully maintained respectability, his work nonetheless shocked his contemporaries with its sensuality and candor. Idolized by a wealthy elite eager to pay a fortune to sit for him, another side of his oeuvre reveals his fascination with Bedouins, Spanish dancers, and Venetian gondoliers. This film offers a portrait full of contradictions: an American born in Florence, we follow him from his nomadic childhood across Europe, through the salons of Paris and London, and finally to the United States, his homeland. Although immensely successful during his life
