British alternative rock group Skunk Anansie celebrates its 25th anniversary with the album 25LIVE@25. These 90s rock scene icons, whose hair-raising shows have become legendary, celebrate their storied career with this 25-song project. With a selection of recordings taken from various 2017 live performances, Skunk Anansie once again proves its unbeatable power on stage. The setlist includes “Because of You,” “The Skank Heads,” and “Tear the Place Up.” Don’t miss the triumphant return of these pillars of rock to the stage of the 28th edition of Les Vieilles Charrues in Carhaix, France, in 2019!

In 2018, WOMEX was held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. One of its participating bands, Invisible World, is based at the jazz crossroads where East European and Mediterranean influences merge and caper off in new directions. Led by Czech bassist Tomáš Liška, a prolific idea man of many projects, joined by Turkish violinist Efe Turumtay, Serbian accordionist Nikola Zarić and Moravian drummer Kamil Slezák.

The Da Pá Virada Sessions series presents the best musicians of contemporary Brazilian jazz, and beyond. Filmed in São Paulo, each session offers a unique experience by giving a fresh look into Brazil's music scene. The artists for each session are selected in consultation with Stingray DJAZZ's music editor. One of the bands taking part in this series is the duo of Giana Viscardi and Gustavo Marques. After starting their career together, Giana Viscardi and Gustavo Marques released music in many places around the world. After returning to Brazil, they worked together on Giana's album "ORUM", performing in Africa, Europe, and Brazil. In this New Year's Eve special, presented by Da Pá Virada Sessions and Stingray, Giana Viscardi and Gustavo Marques perform conductor and arranger Letieres Leite's arrangements of their work with Orchestra Rumpilezz. Enjoy their fantastic Afro-Brazilian jazz, which combines the best of various continents.

One of its showcase participants, Korean percussionist Kim So Ra, has played the hourglass-shaped, two-headed drum known as janggu since she was a child. Quietly, she has been taking revolutionary steps to modernize perceptions within traditional Korean music.

Filmed in São Paulo, each session offers a unique experience by giving a fresh look into Brazil's music scene. The artists for each session are selected in consultation with Stingray DJAZZ's music editor. One of the bands taking part in this series is Panorama de Coro. This ensemble combines jazz and traditional Brazilian music. The resulting music has a festive, almost street-like atmosphere. Panorama de Coro consists of Roberta Valente (pandeiro and percussion), Alexandre Ribeiro (clarinet), Gian Correa (7-string guitar), Henrique Araujo (cavaquinho), João Poleto (flute and tenor saxophone) and Yves Finzetto (pandeiro and percussion).

The vibrant island of Malta was in for a night of light and cheerful music when Brazilian music legend João Bosco took the stage on July 21, 2018. The self-taught guitarist made his music debut in the 1970s alongside Elis Regina and Aldir Blanc. In 2018, with guitarist Ricardo Silveira, bassist João Baptista and drummer Kiko Freitas, Bosco introduces us to his trademark melting pot of bossa nova, samba and MPB, sparingly influenced by contemporary jazz. Following his phenomenal successes in his native Brazil, the enthusiasm of the Maltese crowd underlines that João Bosco is now gradually achieving his long-overdue recognition elsewhere.

Marcela Vale, known professionally as Mahmundi, is a singer, songwriter, and music producer from Rio de Janeiro. A Latin Grammy nominee, she is recognized for her originality and authenticity in the contemporary Brazilian music scene. Her work, spanning electronic music, indie, and lo-fi with 1980s influences, is defined by poetic and reflective lyrics. In addition to her solo career, Mahmundi is also active as a producer and instrumentalist. How do contemporary artists reinterpret tradition and create new forms of expression within MPB? Da Pá Virada Sessions' MPB Series investigates this question. While few people are familiar with the Null + Void project, many have already heard Kurt Uenala's music. After making his debut under the pseudonym Kap10Kurt in 2003, Uenala caught the attention of the world with the play "Die Sleeping". This critical and popular success has led to collaborations with several big names in music, including Moby, The Kills, and Dave Gahan, singer of Depeche Mode, for whom Uenala has subsequently signed plays. Spending more and more time in his Manhattan studio, Uenala developed a unique sound made of angular beats and dark soundscapes, which gave rise to a new melancholy solo project called Null + Void. Cryosleep, Uenala's first album under this new banner, includes several titles inspired by retro science fiction, new wave and electronic innovators. Jazz in Duketown is the largest free outdoor jazz festival in the Netherlands. It's a real gathering for jazz addicts, inviting internationally renowned artists. In 2019, one of them is Copenhagen-based Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset, who is known internationally for his collaborations with People Are Machines, Kaktusch, JazzKamikaze, and Django Bates' projects StoRMChaser and Human Chain. Neset completed his Master's degree at the Copenhagen Rhythmic Music Conservatory in 2008.

She writes songs suffused with the many influences she assimilated growing up in Malabo in Africa’s only Spanish-speaking country, Equatorial Guinea. The result is an eclectic mix that she nevertheless incorporates into a sound all her own.

In 2019, the vibrant city of Sofia, Bulgaria, hosted the International A to JazZ Festival. Among the featured acts was the trailblazing jazz trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah. This genre-defying artist captivated the audience with his eclectic “stretch music”; an approach that incorporates hip-hop and reaches back through the American canon into African percussion and its rich melodic content. Trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah’s quintet, which includes drummer Corey Fonville, percussionist Weedie Braimah, pianist Lawrence Fields, and bass guitarist Max Mucha, delivered a performance that defied boundaries and expectations.

One of its showcase participants, Norayr Kartashyan, is acclaimed as one of Armenia’s finest woodwind masters and composers, an acknowledged virtuoso numerous traditional Armenian instruments. To name a few: the blul and shvi flutes, duduk, the double-reed zurna trumpet, the pku clarinet, and the parkapzuk bagpipe. Kartashyan’s compositions are gently unfolding, delicately intertwined evocations of rural music with a timeless connection to the earth, full of beauty and warmth.

English musician, songwriter, and singer Johnny Marr has enjoyed an exemplary career since his former band The Smiths split up in 1987. His distinctive guitar sound has been part of such varied groups as The Pretenders, The Cribs, Modest Mouse, and Electronic, the group he co-founded with Bernard Sumner of New Order. Now a living legend, Johnny Marr showcases his incredible singer-songwriter talents on each new album. His recent, hit-packed release Call The Comet (2018) gave us “The Tracers” and “Hi Hello,” and his live performances – which usually include some songs from his days with The Smiths – always hit the mark. Pianist Kenny Barron’s June 27, 2019 appearance at the Alfa Jazz Festival in Ukraine’s Lviv was a celebration of sublime jazz virtuosity. The revered elder statesmen of jazz piano brought his regular working trio of Kiyoshi Kitagawa (bass) and Jonathan Blake (drums), augmented by stellar jazzman Marcus Strickland (tenor saxophone) and young lion Riley Mulherkar (trumpet). Their seamless blend of classic bebop and modern explorations spoke of a deep, emotive connection to each note, captivating the Ukrainian audience with lyrical improvisations during this unforgettable concert.

After playing Glastonbury and other summer festivals, the English rock band The Libertines are definitely back with their album Anthems For Doomed Youth. With this new tour de force, the group (with original members Pete Doherty, Carl Barat, John Hassall, and Gary Powell) opens a new chapter in history. Anthems For Doomed Youth, highly acclaimed by the press, is their first since their studio album Libertines, now a British rock classic, topped the charts back in 2004. One of its showcase participants, composer/performer/anthropologist Rob Thorne, is a diverse explorer in the newly revived evolution of taonga puoro, traditional Māori instruments, fusing these ancient voices with modern sounds and technology. He creates ethereal and immersive site-specific works as well as contemporary chamber music, born out of in-depth research and respect for tradition.

Legendary Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés brought his band ‘Jazz Batá 2’ to the Malta Jazz Festival on July 19, 2019. The air was thick with anticipation as Valdés took to the stage, revisiting the small-group concept of his mythical 1972 Cuban album ‘Jazz Batá’. The batá repertoire – the deep classical music of West Africa – permeates Valdés’ piano solos throughout the concert. Valdés’s band consists of Dreiser Durruthy (Batas and vocals), Yaroldy Abreu (percussions and vocals), Abraham Mansfarroll (percussion), Ramón Vazquez Martirena-Bajo (bass guitar). They delivered a performance that reverberated through the historic island.

The NYC band Lucky Chops rose to fame when a video of their performance at a subway station went viral on YouTube in 2015. Since then, the energetic quintet has been entertaining audiences all over the world. The band was formed in 2006, when trumpeter Joshua Gawel, saxophonist Daro Behroozi, trombonist Josh Holcomb, tubist Raphael Buyo, and drummer Charles Sams, met during their education at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Besides touring globally, Lucky Chops also aspires to inspire new generations of musicians by regularly performing at clinics and educational outreaches. In August 2018, they performed their high-energy brassy funk at BIRD, in Rotterdam.
