The National Gallery of London is offering a fresh look at arguably one of the greatest artists of all – Johannes Vermeer, painter of the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring. In an exhibition entitled ‘Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure’, The National Gallery has chosen to focus on Vermeer’s relationship with music. It is one of the most popular themes of Dutch painting and reveals an enormous amount about this most fascinating of artists.
Although Degas’ art is difficult to classify, it is often associated with the impressionist movement, which emerged in France at the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, he developed a very personal style with a preference for indoors subjects rather than the open-air scenes favoured by the impressionist painters. After the tsunami in Japan in March 2011, a collective of architects led by Toyo Ito launched the "houses for all" project, collective spaces for the inhabitants of devastated towns. Three young architects, Su Fujimoto, Kumiko Inui and Akihisa Hirata, are building one of these houses in Rikuzentakata. Using trees from the destroyed forest, they create an image of a house with a pointed roof, pierced by 19 trunks. Winding around the interior spaces, a promenade alternates between staircases and terraces, facing the landscape: the grid of streets, the only trace of the vanished city.

Impressionist artist first, he is a initiator of the post-impressionnisme and the cubisme in his labour. In his still lifes and his “Bathers”, he is innovative in his geometric forms, which influenced the Cubist artists who came after him. He chose to paint the “Mont Saint Victoire” twenty times in his landscapes.
