Exhibition on Screen

Wilhelm Hansen was a visionary businessman who lived in Denmark in the 19th century. He was one of the few collectors to take an interest in the Impressionist painters, at a time when they were attacked and denigrated. The film takes us to Hansen's summer home on the outskirts of Copenhagen, and to the extraordinary exhibition of his collection at London's Royal Academy.

Within the frame

Named Euphrosyne, Thalia and Aglaia, they embody mirth, abundance and splendour. They are the Three Graces, daughters of Jupiter and companions of Venus. A very prized subject as early as the Renaissance, it allowed for a triple representation of the female nude in all its ideal beauty. Observe their grace in the painting by Raphael and the delicacy of their veils in Botticelli’s “La Primavera” or in a magnificent work by Cranach recently acquired by the Louvre Museum. Architectures

In 1995, the City of Luxembourg decided to build a large concert hall on the Kirchberg plateau, the new district of banks and major European institutions. The aim of the commission was to bring together three major public performance spaces in a single complex: a large philharmonic hall, a small chamber music hall and a discovery space. Architect Christian de Portzamparc, admirably assisted by the experience of acoustician Xu Yaying, made this hall his great musical instrument. The elliptical shape, with its filter of white columns and coloured cliffs, reveals the auditorium as a real jewel in its setting, one of the architect's most beautiful buildings.

Sketchbook

Raphael Federici (street artist), Marine Goodmorning (illustrator), Luca Fiore (cartoonist) and Harry Boudchicha (drawing teacher) reveal their best drawing techniques. Each episode focuses on a specific subject: movement, oil painting, shadows, hair... For the first 10 minutes, each artist gives a theoretical lesson illustrated by sketches. Then they each start working on their creation. Finally, they end with a debrief, comparing and explaining their techniques

Two stars of the seventies, cool crooner Tony Christie and pop royalty Jimmy Osmond are accompanied by experts Catherine Southon and Margie Cooper. Blasting off from the Leicestershire town of Loughborough they’ll head for an auction in the Staffordshire city of Stoke-on-Trent. Tony squeezes in a visit to Coalbrookdale, the place where ground breaking techniques were developed that kick-started the industrial revolution. And petrol-head Jimmy gets to whizz round the historical race circuit at Donington. The big auction finale includes a sing-a-long like no other. But which musical maestro will clinch victory?

The Goldstein Residence

Discover James Goldstein's house in the heights of Hollywood. It is a beautiful example of the architecture of the mythical and prolific John Lautner. When Goldstein bought this property, the house was not finished and Lautner died in the meantime. Goldstein set about finishing it with the help of the famous architect's former associates. To top it off, he commissioned James Turrell to create an original work on the hillside.

A special day

In this episode, we will spend a special day with Jef Aerosol, one of the pioneers of street art. This stencil artist is the sponsor of Solid'Art, a contemporary art fair unlike any other, where the money raised helps children go on vacation. To celebrate the opening of the fair, he worked on a performance. We will follow him throughout this day of preparations.

The work that introduces the visit of the exhibition dedicated to this amazing artist is called "silence". The artist represented landscapes of his childhood in the Ardennes in France. But he also painted portraits, paintings representing his mother as his painting entitled "Listening to Schumann".

Private Tour takes you to discover the exhibition "Red, art and utopia in the land of the Soviets" at the Grand Palais in Paris. This exhibition focuses on how the communist project generated specific art forms throughout the Soviet period and more precisely from the October Revolution until the death of Stalin in 1953.

Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian, is an undisputed master of the 16th century! His fame spread rapidly from his native town of Venice, to spread throughout Italy and Europe. Popes, kings and emperors all commissioned his portraits. Technical innovations, social recognition and extremely famous paintings, such as Pastoral Concert or the Venus of Urbino, mark the life of Titian. Artist's Workshop

In the suburbs of Paris, in Boulogne-Billancourt, there is an unusual place, « La ruche du Tag ». It's a space entirely dedicated to artists who are adept at Street Art. But before penetrating in this universe out of the common, it is necessary to leave on the step of the door our preconceived ideas on the graffitis and the Tags.

JonOne was born in the Harlem district of New York. At the age of 17, he began graffiti in the streets of the American city, the world capital of Street Art. In 1983, he arrived in Paris and stayed there. After the street, Jon paints in squats, and in 2008, he settles in the lilacs in his studio.

Masterpieces Unveiled

Where do we start when we want to talk about such a famous painting as Velázquez “Las Meninas”? There is an incredibly huge bibliography on this painting, to the point that it is almost utopian to think or hope we can document ourselves on everything in and about it... From the late 1800s to the early 2000s, dozens of books have come out all over the world specifically and solely devoted to this one, single painting. A parallel literary current has even developed around the “enigmas” and “mysteries” connected with “Las Meninas”.

There are few artists who, during their lifetime, prepare the posterity of their work with meticulousness, secrecy and determination. The symbolist painter Gustave Moreau, born in 1826, is one of them. A remarkable event occurred at London’s National Gallery when the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings was assembled in a unique exhibition: Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan. Leonardo is recognised as perhaps the greatest painter and sculptor of all time but there was no end to his talents. This film tells his life story and expands on Leonardo the visionary and inventor from the place where he lived out his final years at Château du Clos Lucé in France, concluding that Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps the very embodiment of the spirit of the Renaissance.

In June 2017, a major exhibition opened in Paris at the Musée d'Orsay. For the first time, this exhibition brought together all Cézanne's portraits. This was an opportunity to analyze Cézanne's work with the help of international experts and to tour the rooms of the National Portrait Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Leonardo da Vinci is the most famous Italian Renaissance painter. A prolifically talented genius, (painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, town planner, mathematician, botanist, philosopher, inventor...), he considerably influenced history of art. His sfumato technique and use of chiaroscuro are still studied today. The “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper” exposed in the Louvre and in the church Santa Maria delle Grazie, displayed here, are among his most renowned paintings, admired and parodied throughout the world. In no way was Pierre Bonnard destined to be a painter. However, he became one of the pillars of the Nabi Movement. His work, more closely linked to emotions than to realism, is impossible to classify. It is punctuated with huge sunny landscapes, of both the Mediterranean and Normandy, with interior scenes, with nudes and self portraits. Celebrity Antiques Road Trip

Top presenting pals Nicki Chapman and Jules Hudson escape to the country to find antiques with Natasha Raskin and Phillip Serrell. It becomes girls versus boys, both teams with £400 in their pockets. Kicking off from Wormsley in Herefordshire they Road Trip into Wales and Oxfordshire, before finally finishing in North Finchley, in London for an auction. Along the way the girls meet a clog maker who carves shoes by hand. While the boys head to the Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum to hear about the regiment’s involvement at Gallipoli.
